Thursday, October 6th, 2016

8:40 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Registration to pick up name tags in the Hotel Meeting Room

8:50 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. USLSSHA Introduction, Welcome, and Overview in the Hotel

Meeting Room.

9:00 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Presentation: “An overview of Louisville and Steamboat Traffic on the Ohio River” from Kadie Engstrom.

9:40 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Restroom break

9:50 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. Presentation: “The History of Station #10 at Louisville, the Falls of the Ohio, 1881-1915” from Chuck Parrish.

10:40 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Restroom break

10:50 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. Presentation: “U.S. Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley ” by deputy commander, CDR Erik Denley, and staff.

11:35 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Presentation: “Ohio River Flood” from Joe Hardesty, archivist with the Louisville Free Public Library

Box Lunch Provided

1:15 p.m. Board bus for Falls of the Ohio and Howard Steamboat Museum

1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tour the Falls of Ohio for an overview of why LSS 10 was placed in this location. The observation deck overlooking the river gives a good perspective of what the river was like during the 19th century and why the boatmen were so important to people, boat and cargo rescue; fossil beds are almost 400 million years old.

2:30 p.m. board bus for Howard Steamboat Museum

2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Tour the Howard Steamboat Museum across the river in Jeffersonville, IN where the second LSS 10 was built.

4:00 p.m. Stop at the Jeffersonville Cemetery to place a marker at the John Munz gravesite.

4:30 p.m. Return to the hotel. Arrive back at hotel.

8:50 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. Registration to pick up name tags in the Hotel Meeting Room for

Daily Attendees

9:00 a.m. Board the Bus for today’s tours.

9:30 a.m. Arrive Ohio River McAlpine Navigation Locks and Dam

10:00 a.m. Welcome and Group Tour of the Ohio River McAlpine Navigation Locks and Dam by Theodore Takacy and staff, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Box Lunch provided.

11:45 a.m – 12:30 p.m. eat at lock observation area picnic area (?)

12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. Explore lock observation platform

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.   Tour the Portland Museum to see images and artifacts, dioramas of the building of the first lock, which had a great influence on river traffic.

3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Walking Tour of the Big 4 Bridge across the Ohio guided by David Karem, president of the Waterfront Development Corporation.

4:00 p.m. Stop at Calvary and St. Louis Cemeteries in Louisville, escorted by U.S.C.G. Sector Ohio Valley and family members to place markers for original boatmen.

4:30 p.m. Return to the hotel. Arrive back at hotel.

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Private Tour LSS 10

9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. USLSSHA Annual Meeting

9:50 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Restroom break

10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Presentation: “Cape Cod Coast Guardsmen and the Ohio River Flood of 1937” from Dick Ryder.

10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. “Presentations by Louisville Descendants” present at the conference.

11:15 a.m. ‐ Walk from hotel and arrival at LSS 10 to board Belle for afternoon cruise.

12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Oktoberfest Cruise on the Belle of Louisville with Buffet Lunch.

3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. – Shop inside LSS 10 gift shop and walk back to Hotel

4:00 p.m. Arrive back at hotel.

6:45 p.m. Annual Dinner and Raffle. Start cocktails followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m.
