Each crewman was provided quarters with a bed and a locker. He was housed at the station and fed, at least until it was his turn to cook. Some stations pooled their money and hired a cook. Pay was considered fairly low for the era, though a meager pension was enacted in 1882. Here the Coos Bay crew lines up at the corner of their station house in rank order from left to right in 1898.
