Each crewman was provided quarters with a bed and a locker.  He was housed at the station and fed, at least until it was his turn to cook.  Some stations pooled their money and hired a cook.  Pay was considered fairly low for the era, though a meager pension was enacted in 1882.  Here the Coos Bay crew lines up at the corner of their station house in rank order from left to right in 1898.  (Courtesy of U.S. Coast Guard.)
